Fundraiser Benefits Fresh Start Surgical Gifts

(Santa Barbara, CA)— December 21, 2012 — Travis Mathew, the exclusive golf apparel company, held its 1st Annual Awesome Tour Invitational last weekend on Friday, December 14th and Saturday, December 15th at the Sandpiper golf course in Santa Barbara. All proceeds from the two day golfing event went to benefit Fresh Start Surgical Gifts, a San Diego-based charity that provides reconstructive surgery to infants, children and teens with physical deformities.

“Travis Mathew has been a wonderful partner, already raising over $40,000 this year with Bubba Watson for Fresh Start and we are excited to have raised more than $30,000 with the 1st Annual Awesome Tour Invitational,” said Shari Brasher, CEO of Fresh Start. “We are thankful to Travis Mathew for hosting the event and for helping us raise the funds that will give children a fresh start at life.”

Participants vied for a $50,000 Pro/Amateur purse and had the opportunity to play with PGA Tour stars John Mallinger, Ricky Barnes and Patrick Cantlay, plus ATP Tour players James Blake, Andy Roddick & Mardy Fish. The event quickly sold out and in addition to having the opportunity to win the pro/amateur purse and the once-in-a-lifetime chance to play with golf pros, players were treated to: two rounds of golf, $200 worth of Travis Mathew Apparel, lawn darts and par 3 competition, breakfast, lunch, dinner and an oceanfront cocktail party. The event wrapped up with and an 80’s themed party at Bacara Resort & Spa, that featured live music by the Spazmatics.

Fresh Start Surgical Gifts is a San Diego nonprofit whose mission is to transform the lives of disadvantaged infants, children and teens with physical deformities. Six times per year, Fresh Start holds a Surgery Weekend, where 80-100 highly-talented individuals provide reconstructive plastic surgery, reconstructive dental surgery, laser treatments and speech therapy to disadvantaged young people. Surgery Weekends are held at the Fresh Start Clinic at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego, California, one of the top children’s hospitals in the nation. All medical and support personnel generously volunteer their time, talent and expertise.

Fresh Start reaches out to children in the U.S. and internationally, believing that no child should suffer with a physical deformity due to birth defect, disease, accident or abuse. An increasing number of reconstructive procedures are being labeled by insurance companies as “cosmetic,” meaning they are not covered by most insurance policies and can become unaffordable. Fresh Start is determined to make certain all children get the medical attention and help they need, regardless of the family’s ability to pay.

Fresh Start accepts infants, children, and young people under the age of 18 from:

  • Financially disadvantaged families with no healthcare insurance
  • Families whose healthcare insurance won’t pay for the procedures because they are deemed cosmetic and unnecessary
  • Families who do not qualify for state-funded programs
  • Families who would suffer significant hardship if they were to pay for the necessary and costly medical treatment
