Chris Kirk 2015 Season

TravisMathew team member Chris Kirk will be defending his 2013-2014 title at the McGladrey Classic this week. Coming off his best year yet with two wins and a 2nd place finish in the FedEx Cup, Chris looks to keep the momentum going in his first start of the 2014-2015 season. Recently, Kirk came out for a quick visit and photo-shoot by the coast in Southern California.

Chris has always been a super easy-going and a ‘roll-with-the-punches’ kind of guy. After the year and meteoric rise he had this past season, we weren’t sure what to expect. Sure enough, when we picked him up from the airport, grabbed his bags and asked where we can get some good tacos, we knew nothing had changed. Chris is a perfect representation of what we believe in here in TM. Laid-back, easy-going. But behind that layer, he is a fierce competitor that is striving to be the best at his craft. At TravisMathew, we look to bring alive the laid-back, southern-california lifestyle that we thrive on in through our products. But on top of that, we look to bring you the best that the industry has to offer and provide you with everything you’ll need for every aspect of your life.

Best of luck to Chris and all of the TravisMathew team competing in this weeks McGladrey Classic. We’re all looking forward to an amazing season!

When WWII ended and the American people were in need of distraction with an urgent sense of returning the country to normal, there was a drastic increase of interest in Hollywood films. Theaters wanted to identify themselves separately from other local businesses and as a result of many construction materials being limited by the war, glass and lights became the primary material for constructing marquees.

The shape also evolved from a small rectangle to a trapezoid, making it more readable to automobile traffic. This may seem irrelevant when thinking about Rock and Roll until you realize how much DNA of this period influenced some of the most famous concert venues.

When your name is on the marquee, you either get the glory or you get the hits. -Meat Loaf

When we assembled the story boards for design inspiration for our Life On Tour Collection, we had many photos of old and famous theaters. Many music venues started out as Hollywood film theaters and have iconic marquees. When we designed the Largo you can see the influence of the neon lights and the clean lines of those historic signs. The Largo is a favorite amongst the staff at TravisMathew, and it’s one of those pieces that you sit back, look at it, and say “Yep, that’s going to be a favorite.” We hope everyone else loves it as much as we do.

One tournament to rule them all. If Chris wins he will win the FedEx Cup, however there are a multitude of scenarios that will still result in Kirk bringing home the cup. If Kirk finishes top 5 he has good chance of winning and can tie as low as 29 for him to mathematically still be crowned as champion.

This weekend Chris Kirk takes on the East Lake Golf Club, only 40 minutes away from his home. Will this be the year that a TravisMathew team member brings home the #1 spot in all of golf?

Congratulations to TravisMathew’s own Chris Kirk who won the Deutsche Bank Title with a bogey free round of 66. This is his second win of the season and biggest win of his career. It also puts him in first place in The FedEx Cup standings and a hopeful to be one of the three Ryder Cup captain’s picks announced Tuesday.

“I definitely put myself in contention for one,” Kirk said. “If I get picked great. If not, I’m still happy with my win today.”

Paired with Rory McIlroy for the second straight day, Kirk took the outright lead for the first time with a 25-foot birdie putt on the 13th hole. Down the stretch, he held off Billy Horschel and the rest of the field thanks to steady play and a red hot putter.

We here could not be happier for Kirk. For those of you asking, Kirk was wearing Hough Pants, and a Carl Spackler polo.

We know how it is when you travel. A few days before your trip you rummage through the closet to locate your luggage and then systematically over-pack for the next few nights. Once you arrive at the airport you check your bag and are off to the next destination. It’s not until you reach the arrival carousel when embarrassment sets in. You never noticed until now; everyone else’s luggage fashionably rounds the chrome corners and you flush with shame as your old, ratty bag scoots along the conveyer belt. When you think of some of the most iconic rock & roll photos, or any major event from the 1960s and 1970s for that matter, it was most likely captured through the lens of Ken Regan. His work made the covers of over 200 magazines and was the trusted photographer of the Doors, the Eagles, Janis Joplin, Bruce Springsteen, Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, the Kennedy family and many more.

As a teen Ken would sneak his camera into the Fillmore East, a music venue in New York’s lower east side, where rock & roll acts would come and play. The Fillmore had a strict no-photography policy, and the promoter who ran the Fillmore East, Bill Graham, would catch Regan and throw him out.

“I would sneak in my camera under my coat, Bill [Graham] would catch me and throw me out, it must have happened over a dozen times. But I had all of these photos and I would show them to magazines. That’s how I got my first official gig, after one of the editors sort of took me under his wing.”

Ken was sent out on his first official gig by the New York Times to cover a concert on Thanksgiving at the Fillmore East. Bill Graham immediately tried to kick Ken out of the theater but this time he had credentials. That night Ken would take photos of Johnny Winter and Jefferson Airplane, but it wasn’t the photos that he took that changed the trajectory of his career (even though those photos were published a few weeks later in the New York Times). It was what he did with those photos.

“I sent Bill Graham a few photos along with a copy of the article that accompanied them and thanked him. I remember telling him how appreciative I was and what it meant to me and to my career.”

Weeks later Graham called Ken and told him no one had ever sent photos taken at his establishment or thanked him before. He said that the Fillmore East would always be open to him and the two became close friends. Bill later opened the doors to some of the biggest names in the industry for Ken.

Ken went on to become Bob Dylan’s most trusted photographer and close friend and captured some of the biggest events for decades, from the Vietnam War to the Olympic Games. He gained the trust of the Kennedy’s, members of the mafia, had access to back stages, war zones, and some of the most remote places of the earth. Ken Regan passed away in 2012 from cancer and never revealed his real age.

From humble beginnings of sharing a warehouse with a metal manufacturing company, to having sponsored players wearing TravisMathew at some of the biggest tournaments of the year, we understand how important it is to remember the beginning, and the importance of saying thank you.

To all of you who love and support us we would like to say thank you. We are sorry for being awesome.

Ken Regan’s book: ALL ACCESS: The Rock ‘n’ Roll Photography of Ken Regan is available at our retail store in Newport Beach, California.

The aroma of wood can be detected from the parking lot, the shop’s facade is inconspicuous and the interior is a blend of organized chaos and meticulous order. Hanging on the walls are blueprints for guitars with markings and notes on how to make improvements. “This is from Clapton, he wanted Blackie to be very specific and wanted the fretboard to feel identical to his old favorite [guitar] Brownie,” explains the man who owns the shop as he points to a hand-drawn sketch the two made together back in 1970.

The man in the shop is Ted Newman Jones, a craftsman in Austin, Texas. His name is not widely known and his face has never been on a magazine cover, but talk to the most iconic names in rock and roll history and his name is legendary.

Give me five minutes and I’ll make any guitar sound the same. Give me ten minutes and I’ll make sure I’m reaching for one of my Newman-Jones. -Keith Richards

Ted looks as if he could give you precise directions to any biker bar within a ten mile radius yet he is soft spoken and polite when he speaks. He starts to tell me of one of his biggest fans.

Keith was specific about playing a five string, I think most people associate me with my work with Keith Richards’ five string, but I’ve made several guitars for Dylan, Tom Petty, Eric Clapton, Ely Jones and scores of others.

You would think a man who had so much influence on the rock and roll scene would be excited when he mentions some of the legends that he has made instruments for, but the real excitement is visible when he begins talking about the product and materials used.

Everything counts when you are making an electric guitar, while the wood preference is all about durability. The Stones loved my guitars in the studio but only take about six (out of sixty) on the road because of how much wear and tear happens. I’ve repaired a few of Jagger’s and Keith’s a handful of times. I take everything into account from the artist, from the preferred brand of strings to the amps that will be used. I may not be the fastest guitar builder, but that’s not my business.

At TravisMathew we can relate to Ted. While we are also fortunate to have celebrities and athletes support our brand and have a devoted fan base who love all things TravisMathew, it’s the attention to detail and the obsession of fabric and quality of our product that we believe separates us from other brands. The TravisMathew Fall ’14 “Life on Tour – El Rey Collection” draws inspiration from life on the road and we believe it best showcases our attention to detail and love of quality.

t was 1996, the concert was Smashing Pumpkins Melancholy Tour. Billy Corgan had already played the popular “Bullet with Butterfly Wings” and the concert was coming to a close. As someone who loves going to shows this is one of the best I had ever been to. As the band exits after performing a full set the question that dwells in the back of every concert-goer’s mind is “Will they play an encore?”

When the realization hit that the stadium lights never turned on the band was already taking their spots and began to play “1979”. If you ever ask me about what I remember most of that night, it was the fact that the Pumpkins played not one but three encores.

In the end, everyone remembers the encore. TravisMathew is proud to announce the El Rey – Encore. We saved the best for last.
