2010 Byron Nelson, Dallas – behind the scenes (video)

May 26th, 2010

Here is a look at TRAVISMATHEW in Dallas for the 2010 Byron Nelson tournament.  This is a behind the scenes look at tournament week, that you won’t see on sports channels, or on the sports page.  This video includes, hanging out with tour professionals John Mallinger and Tommy Armour ||| (including Tommy’s infamous Byron Nelson party), a tennis match between John Mallinger and Mark Knowles (professional tennis player), a clinic with TM long drive champ Jamie Sadlowski and more!!  In Jamie’s section … he hit’s it 400 yards through a watermelon, as well as a piece of plywood!  Hitting it over the fence of the range was easy for him, but everyone was surprised to see him hit almost as far left handed!

Mallinger on “Khaki Crusader”

October 29th, 2009

I love the whole monochrome movement. All-white and all-black (the “Gary Player”) looks have been a popular choice for style-minded players for the past several years on Tour.

Between Geoff Ogilvy’s gray rainsuit by Puma on Thursday and John Mallinger’s and Phil’s selections today, the head-to-toe color at Bethpage is gray. (Matches the skies.) I like especially how Phil played the steel gray shirt with the charcoal pinstriped trousers. The difference in color and texture keeps things interesting. Mallinger went for a more solid all-graphite look in Travis Mathew, but was equally as successful. Both players chose to pair with black accessories, probably the only sensible choice besides white – which could be a very cool summer look.

What they said: John Mallinger

July 18th, 2009

THE MODERATOR: Okay, I’d like to welcome John Mallinger to the interview room. John has shot back-to-back rounds of 66, and stands at 8 under. If you’d just start off and give us some general comments about your round today, and then we’ll take some questions.

JOHN MALLINGER: Overall, it was pretty solid. I played exactly how I wanted to. I had a couple of three-putts coming in. But overall I struck the ball well.

I think I had 7 birdies and three bogies, maybe. Couple of three-putts. But other than that, it was pretty solid.

THE MODERATOR: Questions?

Q. How would you say this course fits your game? Does it fit it really well? A lot of people say they like the way the golf course looks. It fits their eye, that kind of thing.

JOHN MALLINGER: Yeah, it does. It fits my eye well…

Friendly rivalry, recent TOUR success boost Mallinger

May 23rd, 2009

IRVING, Texas — He swore he could get a point, maybe two, off Mark Knowles in a set on the indoor tennis courts at Las Colinas Sports Club.

He put $200 on the line and got skunked. Zero points. Not even close.

A Golden Set is the term for the winner. A shut out.

John Mallinger — a young Val Kilmer lookalike — grinned. What’s a guy gonna do? He was facing a buddy, yes. But when that buddy is one half of the world’s third-ranked doubles team?

“You know, he’s on his game now,” Mallinger smiled.

Actually, they both are. Just on different surfaces.

Knowles is headed to Paris tomorrow for the French Open, the second leg of tennis’ Grand Slam, where he’ll play with partner Mahesh Bhupathi.

And Mallinger? After throwing out a second consecutive 65, he’s tied for the 54-hole lead…
