TravisMathew Summer Soundtrack

What is summer without not only a go-to playlist of tracks to listen to at a pool party, backyard BBQ or in the club, but that anthem that officially signifies that summer is here and it’s time to get down? There are dos and don’ts when it comes to creating a mega-hit song for the summer and some say it’s actually scientific. We’re first going to breakdown what it takes to be even considered to be the Song of the Summer, then we’ll give you our summer soundtrack to enjoy this season.

It must be performed ad nauseam on the radio and preferably across various station genres. Remember, the Song of the Summer tends to speak to both the mom driving the minivan and the kids in the back.

It should sound vaguely familiar but also brand-spanking new at the same time. “Wait, wasn’t that the song that was overplayed to death last summer?” or “Oh, yeah, I totally know this song already” are actually good things for a brand new song.

It should be released close to the start of the summer. A song, if strong enough to be the Song of the Summer, can have a shelf-life of five or six months, so no earlier than February. Anything released late the previous year will have a hard time keeping up steam to be considered Song of the Summer.

It should sound like summer. Making sure the bassline includes some steel-drums or a Jamaican rapper spitting a verse can’t hurt. Also lyrics referencing the pool, beach, BBQs, flip-flips, the sun, etc. are sure to grant extra points by the judges.

Last and not least, one of the most important qualities to being named Song of the Summer is that by the time that summer does end, you never want to hear the song again.

And without further ado, here’s the TravisMathew 2017 Summer Soundtrack:

“Feels” - Calvin Harris, Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry, Big Sean

After a few swings and misses. Katy Perry is back, even if only offering her voice to the chorus of this Calvin Harris produced jam. Any fun, lighthearted pop-fueled banger with Pharrell is destined to make your summer mixtape, right? We know this song, with its beachy and summery vibe, will get the party bouncing around the pool.

“That’s What I Like” – Bruno Mars

“Run Up” – Major Lazer feath. PartyNextDoor & Niki Minaj

“There for You” – Martin Garrix, Troye Sivan

“Something Just Like This” – The Chainsmokers, Coldplay

Another season, another hit brought to you by The Chainsmokers. Despite being water-down and radio friendly, we can’t deny the popularity The Chainsmokers are able to conjure up, song after song. Collaborating with Chris Martin and Coldplay, the kings of rock pop of the previous decade or so, was a stroke of genius. Even though “Something Just Like This” debuted back in February, its still going strong this summer, just like that tan you’re currently working on.

“Unforgettable” by French Montana ft. Swae Lee

“Strip That Down” – Liam Payne ft. Quavo

“Look At Us Now” – Lost Kings, Ally Brooke, A$AP Ferg

“Passionfruit” – Drake

Hearing a fire track from Drake every summer is starting to become a regular occurrence. You can practically plan that Hawaiian vacation or trip to the river around the release date of a Drake summer jam. “Passionfruit” might be Drake’s chilliest single to date and there’s nothing wrong with that…we want to be chill during the summer. The beat is catchy and you’ll probably find yourself singing along to the chorus without even knowing it.

“No Lie” – Sean Paul feat. Dua Lipa

“Summer to Stay” – Nat Conway

“It Ain’t Me” – Kygo and Selena Gomez

“Stay” – Zedd & Alessia Cara

This song checks off a lot of boxes on why it’s destined to be a hit this summer. Written by an omnipresent producer (Zedd)? Check. Vocals by a well-known pop artist that girls (and/or guys) can sing along to as if they are auditioning for “America’s Got Talent”? Check. Catchy-as-hell sugary EDM-infused beat? Check.

“Came Here for Love” – Sigala, Ella Eyre

“Forever Young” – Lil Yachty feat. Diplo

“Final Song” - MØ
